FOR OWNERS

WEST COLUMBIA:
YOU DON'T OWN A BUSINESS.

Most business owners do not actually own a business. They own a job.

If that landed, the rest of this page is for you.

How to tell where you are

One question, asked honestly, tells an owner where they stand.

  • The question. If you vanished for thirty days without warning, what would specifically break?
  • The wrong version of it. Would it be hard? Of course it would. Difficulty is not information.
  • The right version. What would actually stop.
  • The instruction. Write it down. A list held in your head does not count.
  • The reading. That list is the size of your job, and the inverse of the size of your asset.
  • The uncomfortable part. Most of the entries turn out to be decisions nobody else has ever been allowed to make.

The local version of the problem

The Charleston Highway corridor carries one of the densest concentrations of Hispanic-owned businesses in the Midlands: restaurants, groceries, auto repair, barbers, trucking. Separately, the State Street district has filled with independent restaurants and shops.

A large share of local business is conducted in two languages, and owners who built a customer base by word of mouth inside one community often have no straightforward way to reach the one across the bridge.

The arts and restaurant district along State and Meeting Streets has become the civic center, and the Riverwalk did what a park is supposed to do: gave separate neighborhoods one place they all use. That cuts both ways for an owner. Reputation compounds faster in a market this size, and so does the expectation that you personally will be the one who answers.

The distinction that saves money

ConsultingCoaching
Changes how the business worksChanges how the owner operates
Installs process, numbers, seats and systemsChanges decisions, standards, calendar and behaviour
Right when the problem is structuralRight when you know what to do and are not doing it

Buying the wrong one is the most common waste in this category. If nobody knows who owns the next step, a coach will not fix it. If you keep taking the work back onto your own desk, a new system will not fix that either.

When to spend the money elsewhere

If this is youWhat would actually help
You have decided already and want agreementA friend, not a paid relationship
Your calendar is not going to changeNothing, until it does
You are after tacticsFree written material, of which there is plenty. Accountability is what is sold here
You have no customers yetSales activity. Structure organises revenue; it does not create it
You are in genuine financial distressAn attorney and a CPA, first and urgently

Seeing yourself in the left-hand column is not a rejection. It is the shortest route to the thing that will help.

No outcome is guaranteed

No outcome. Not a revenue figure, not a timeline, not a transformation. Anyone in West Columbia or anywhere else who attaches a number to a coaching relationship is selling something they cannot deliver.

What is available is narrower: someone who has run the business you are trying to run, who will tell you the truth about what they see, and who will check whether you did what you said. That is most of what accountability actually is.

Redevelopment is moving outward from the river and the State Street corridor. The industrial side keeps expanding on its own schedule, largely independent of what happens downtown. Growth makes an owner-dependent business worse, not better, so a market that is expanding is exactly the wrong place to postpone this.

Frequently asked

Questions people actually ask

What is the difference between coaching and consulting?

Consulting installs systems in the business. Coaching changes how the operator makes decisions and spends time. Buying the wrong one is the usual waste.

Do I need to be in West Columbia?

No. The Midlands is home ground, but the work is not geographic. Two bridges define the day. Bus routes cross the river from Columbia, the airport and the interstate are both minutes away, and a lot of people here commute within a very short radius.

Is there a free way to start?

Yes — a free learning community and free written material. Use those first. If the free layer is not useful to you, a paid one will not rescue it.

Is this faith-based?

Ben's faith is part of his story and it shapes why he builds the way he does. Nobody is required to share it, and the material does not depend on it.

What actually happens in a coaching relationship?

A regular rhythm, honest assessment of what you are actually doing versus what you said you would do, and pressure applied to the one or two decisions that matter most this quarter. It is not a course and it is not therapy.

Make your next move

A year from now, what will you be glad you started today?

You don't need another promise that everything will be easy. You need something useful to learn — and a next step you're willing to take.
